Well this is a very good question, and it’s one i’ll attempt to answer to the best of my ability. Many people won’t have even considered which of these they’re on to be honest, and as long as they are getting highspeed broadband they’re happy with then i suppose it doesn’t really matter…
However, for those who like to optimise, cable highspeed broadband is significantly faster than DSL; but let’s have a closer look at what they are and what they do:
DSL highspeed broadband
- Your DSL connection, and how it compares with cable is often dependent on where you live and how close you are to your telephone exchange.
- DSL averages at speeds between 768Kbps – 1.5Mbs
- DSL can be a little more secure than a cable connection. This is because a DSL highspeed internet connection is not shared. You are more likely to be attacked on a shared connection like cable. This can involve eavesdropping and service theft.
- DSL is often cheaper than Cable.
Cable highspeed broadband
- Cable highspeed broadband connections are much faster than DSL averaging between 4Mps – 20Mps and higher.
- Cable speeds are consistent and do not depend on location; although they will depend on the maintainance of the cable network (for example, whether they have been updated to fibre optics).
- Cable is not as secure as DSL
- Cable is more expensive
Again, i repeat what i said in the beginning, if you are happy with the speed you get then you shouldn’t have a problem. Also you may not be able to get cable internet connections where you live; indeed, you may not even be able to get highspeed broadband (or even broadband) where you live!
